What is Hypnosis?

What can I expect during a hypnosis session?

A hypnosis session is nothing like what you might have seen in movies or stage shows. There’s no swinging pocket watch, no loss of control, and you won’t be made to do anything that goes against your values. Instead, it’s a safe, calming experience that helps your mind shift into a state of focused relaxation, similar to when you’re deeply absorbed in a book, a movie, or even driving and suddenly realizing you’ve missed a few exits.

Here’s what usually happens:

  1. Conversation First – We’ll start by discussing your goals, concerns, and what you’d like to change. This helps me understand what’s most important to you and also eases any nerves.
  2. Gentle Relaxation – I’ll guide you through simple breathing or visualization exercises to help your body relax and your mind settle. You remain aware the whole time, just in a calmer, more focused state.
  3. VAK Techniques – Everyone processes information differently. Some people are more visual (pictures and imagery resonate most), others are more auditory (words, tones, and sounds connect strongly), and some are more kinesthetic (they feel things through physical sensations and emotions). During hypnosis, I adapt the language and techniques to your natural learning style. Whether that’s guiding you to see positive images, hear empowering suggestions, or feel calming sensations so the experience is deeply personal and effective.
  4. Guided Change – Using suggestions and imagery tailored to you, we work with your subconscious to release old habits and reinforce new, healthier patterns.
  5. Integration – Toward the end, I’ll gently bring you back to your normal waking awareness, often with a sense of lightness, clarity, or calm. Many people say it feels like waking up from the best nap, even though you were never asleep.
  6. Reflection – We’ll briefly discuss how you feel afterward and what you can notice or practice between sessions.

You are always in control. You can open your eyes, speak, or stop the session at any time. Think of me as a guide, but you’re the one walking the path.

Most people leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and often surprised at how natural and comfortable the process feels.

Is hypnosis safe and suitable for everyone?

Absolutely. Hypnosis is a natural, safe process tailored to your needs. Hypnosis is one of the oldest psychiatric methods, used successfully since the 1700s. In some cases, like pain management, a quick consultation with your healthcare provider may be recommended first.

How many sessions will I need to see results?

Everyone’s journey is unique, so the number of sessions can vary depending on your goals and how deeply rooted the patterns are. Some people notice positive shifts after just one session, while others benefit from a series of sessions to reinforce change and build lasting results.

Think of it this way: traditional therapy often works from two directions; top-down and bottom-up.

  • Top-down approaches (like traditional talk therapy, coaching, or mindset work) focus on conscious thought. They help you analyze, reflect, and understand what’s happening.
  • Bottom-up approaches (like hypnosis, breathwork, or somatic practices) work with the subconscious and the body. These methods help release stored emotions, automatic reactions, and old patterns that talking alone can’t always shift.

Hypnosis bridges the two. It works with your subconscious mind (where habits, beliefs, and automatic responses live) while also supporting the conscious goals you set for yourself. Because of this, some changes happen quickly, while others build over time as your mind integrates both the top-down understanding and the bottom-up healing.

Most clients begin with a series of 3–6 sessions, giving enough space for deep change and reinforcement. From there, many continue with maintenance or “tune-up” sessions when new challenges arise like keeping your mental gutters clear so everything flows smoothly.

Do I need to prepare for my hypnosis appointment?

No special prep required. Just bring an open mind and a willingness to explore. Everything else will be guided during your session.
